Had a short evening trip on Lake Carasaljo with Z and my dad. We put in around 530 and fished the back shallow cove mostly. The weeds are HIGH in this lake, with some nice patchiness spread through but outside the creek channel its mostly grass and muck all the way to the surface. This made fishing a bit tougher than expected as it was the slimy grass/weeds so everything was getting stuck on the lures.
I started off nailing a little 1 lber on a fluke jerkbait. Had a couple blows ups on it later but i only managed one more fish on a yum frog, a nice 2lber. Had a couple pickerel take some swipes at both the fluke and the frog but doing. My dad had a few hits on the fluke too, one massive hit when a pickerel went flying out of the water with his lure and then proceeded to bite right through his line... tough break.
Z was throwing the Yum Money Hound, hot dog looking lure for a big. He ended up sticking a very nice 4.4 lber largemouth on it when it swam directly at the boat and i lipped that bad boy. All in all a good day, strange because we normally catch mostly pickerel in here, yet today the averages went to the bass. We are not complaining though. Im thinking about hitting this again this weekend, heading to some of the deeper water where the grass is just below instead of on the surface.
God I love those topwater massive strikes!
