flats fishing is loaded with etiquette rules....the one i learned very early on, is if you can tell what color the boat is you are too close! also if you use your trolling motor or pushpole to get on a flat, then use it to leave. one really simple rule is when in doubt ,put yourself in the other persons boat and ask yourself this question- would i want someone to do that to me if i were him? that should clear things up! in this day and age of crowded waterways, etiquette is of utmost importance. i applaud you for bringing it up!

On the first day, the papio (small GT) moved in along the beach in Hilo Bay... the crew of regulars.. the retired guys who met there every day started catching fish like crazy. The next day 50 people lined the beach... everyone catching. The following day, 300 anglers were enjoying the unusual run of fish and everyone was catching..... and having a great time. Then commercial fishing boat moved in and started to surround the giant school of fish with nets. At first there was stunned silence from the shore... then loud voices of complaint. Then 1/2 ounce (and larger) lead weights were cast at the commercial fishermen as they netted the school of fish just off the beach infront of the now very angry fishermen. Police were called... "Sorry, it's legal, nothing we can do" Angry shore fisherman wrote letters to newspapers, the fish and game dept. and their legislators. Angry groups of anglers stormed public meetings and hearings. Now there is a new law.... "NO Netting in Hilo Bay". Got to love those old retired guys who hang out fishing at the beach every day.

I also have had some bad experiences. Two years ago, my wife and I were fishing the Potomac in the SJBCA Bass Bowl and we were fishing a bank in Mattawoman Creek that had small patches of pads. There was a guy fishing across from us on the other side. I caught a decent sized bass and the guy in the other boat shot across and started fishing not 25 feet in front of me. My wife yelled to him that it was pretty rude and the guy said it is a free country and he could fish where he wants. I calmly started up the big motor and moved 25 feet in front of him and started fishing. He got the hint and left.

I had taken my father-in-law up into the Big Horn National Forest on his first fly fishing outing. We were on a remote section of a stream that was almost 5 miles from the nearest trailhead. This is not the most remote place I have fished in the forestm but it is not uncommon to go a whole day without seeing anyone but the people you hiked in with and there is more than enough stream to share peacefully should you see someone else. We are fishing our way upstream in a large mountain meadow. This particular meadow contains about 800 yards of the stream snaking through it. We are having a decent, not great, day catching brookies. All of the sudden here come 2 greenies (the Wyoming pejorative for people from Colorado) with their 4 labradors, spinning gear and reeking of patchouli. I am not making this up, we could actually smell the patchouli before we could see them, but not before we could hear them. These two asswipes decides the best plan of action would be for one of them to stand about 10 yards downstream from us while the other stood 10 yards upstream from us and then start plunking their Mepp's and Jake's lures into the water while allowing their dogs to go "fishing" in between them. My father in law, a retired Air Force NCO and State Trooper, was about ready to "kill them and tell God they got lost in the woods." I agreed that was an excellent idea but suggested we simply move upstream about 100 yards. We went with my plan and these pricks followed us and set up in the same manner as before about five minutes after we left them. I explaind to them how rude what they were doing was and further explained that there was mnore than enough room for all of us to fish in peace. Greenie #1 took this as my telling him that he did not have the right to fish the river at all and proceeded to get extremely pissed and told Greenie #2 to help (I am paraphrasing here) "explain to us that we would be leaving them alone to fish the meadow in solitude." At this point, I used the entire magnum can of bear spray I always have with me to thoroughly coat both of the greenies and all of their gear and my father in law and I left them alone to fish the meadow in peace. We went back to the trailhead and found a ranger and told her what had happened and what we had to educate the two young men leaving descriptions of them and their dogs. I have no idea what happened after that but I am assuming that they lived because, unfortunately, I never read anything about 2 dog-chewed carcasses being found in the vicinity of the meadow.

wow what a small world lol.. just read my report "windy march" it just happen the other day to me ..there i was minding my own and all of a sudden 10-15 people from france or somewhere they didnt speak english just piled in right on top of me ..stepping on my rods and kicking my bottle of tea into the ocean tangleing my lines it was just so rude !! but i was proud of myself instead of throwing them all in the drink which crossed my mind several times lol.. i just packed up and moved to another spot.. but people need to respect each other and your space..there is enough fishing waters in florida for everyone no need to crowd in on someone.
